LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered and
questioning issues.
People who are lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgendered can face
many hurtles in life. They are a minority living in a majority
population. LGBTQ people comprise 10% of the population.
Issues they face include discovering they are LGBTQ,
the coming out process, formulating an identity, fear of rejection
by friends and family, prejudice in housing and employment, and
physical danger. Therapy for this population is largely
supportive and educational in nature If other conditions are
present, like depression or anxiety, they are also treated by
therapy and sometimes medication.
LMA does not practice unethical therapies such as
conversion therapy (American Psychological Association Ethical
Principles and Code of Conduct) that tries to "make" a person
heterosexual. Can you imagine trying to "make" someone who is
heterosexual gay? The notion is quite absurd and has proven
ineffective. At LMA, people who are LGBTQ are treated with
respect and dignity.
